 FAQ

How often should I have my clock cleaned?

The British Watch and Clockmakers’ Guild recommend that clocks are cleaned and serviced (overhauled) every four years to keep them in the best possible condition. If your clock has not been overhauled for more than eight years then you should certainly consider having work done.

This is because over time the oil that keeps the machine running smoothly will dry out, or become contaminated with fine metal particles from the clock and dust from the air, turning it into a black sticky sludge. This dirty oil can be abrasive and causes the clock to wear. It needs to be cleaned off and any worn parts repaired to put the clock in good working condition again.

Do you repair watches?

No, we specialise in the repair and restoration of clocks and barometers, music boxes and antique clocks.

Should I oil my clock?

Short answer, no. The wrong oil, too much oil or oil in the wrong places will do much more harm than good. A clock that does not run needs special attention, adding more oil is not the solution and can shorten the clock's life considerably.

My antique lock does not work or has no key, can you help?

Yes, we can repair old locks, make keys to fit old locks and even make locks to fit old clocks and furniture if they are missing.

Is my clock worth repairing?

For many people, the sentimental value their clock has for them answers this question. In purely financial terms, a working clock always has a higher value than a non-working one. So it is a question that you need to answer for yourself. To provide some help in making that decision we are happy to offer free quotes and advice.

Should I polish my metal clock case?

Metal polish and clock mechanisms do not mix well. The white residue from metal polish that builds up in the nooks and crannies of clock cases gets into the oil and becomes extremely abrasive. Wipe metal clock cases with a soft dry cloth, especially if they are already lacquered. For clock cases with polish residue build up we can clean this off, then polish and lacquer the case so it requires no further attention.

Do you buy and sell clocks?

I’m afraid we do not buy or sell clocks. For antique clocks and barometers please visit Graham Smith Antiques. We are happy to repair any clock you might purchase that is not currently in good working order.
